Non Religious FuneralsMany people today have not found in institutional religion anything that truly meets their deepest needs. For such people, a belief in the potential, and actual, goodness of humanity is often something central to their worldview and becomes the basis for their own highest ideals. Sometimes we call this worldview "humanism". As a liberal Christian I am very happy to offer purely humanist funerals. Normally, at such a funerals, reflections replace prayers, often CDs replace the organ and hymns, and poetry and other readings replace more traditional worship material. In this way we retain the ordered and dignified format of a service without in anyway compromising the deceased's most cherished beliefs. Semi-Religious FuneralsMany people do not want an explicitly religious funeral and yet they do not identify as humanists or atheists either. For such people the service will contain perhaps suitable reference to the afterlife, possibly a little prayer, maybe one of two hymns, but generally the ambience will reflect more a spiritual agnosticism than a conventional piety. Religious FuneralsI am a Liberal Catholic Bishop and a member of the Independent Liberal Catholic Fellowship. Whether the person who has died was a practising member of any Christian church or not I will be happy to offer a Requiem Mass, or traditional Catholic funeral, if desired. I am also quite happy to conduct a plainer more Protestant style of service if that is preferred. I have a wide stock of good worship material from which to compile a ceremony to suit every preference, including interfaith material. Whether the funeral we decide on is non-religious, semi-religious, Christian or interfaith, each service is personalised by me in consultation with the family and friends of the deceased person. My usual fee for this service is £60. "I am writing to thank you for the lovely service for Mum. Your words and poem we feel were a great comfort to everyone present. I thought the words of the poem very touching. Everyone who attended commented on the beautiful service. Thank you once again and God bless you in your work in helping others". Mrs A.K., Edinburgh |
